Hola a todos....
So I`ve had a great first week here in Camino Carrasco (that`s what my new area is called) and when I got to changes found out that it would be another ¨Whitewash¨ so that makes it 3 out of my 4 areas that I have started in a whitewash. Elder Butler is an awesome missionary from Highland, UT and has been in the mission for about a year and a half. He likes basketball and plays the piano. He is a fun guy to be around and we get around great. It`s been great working with him and to learn how to be a zone leader. In our zone we have 14 missionaries including all of the office missionaries (the assistants, financers and the secretaries) so there really hasn`t been too much obedience issues from the zone, hahaha.
My area is HUGE now, like 4 times the size of Pan de Azucar with about 10 times the people. We live in an apartment on the 4th floor of a 13 floor complex and we have a great view of the city. We have to take the bus to get around the zone but we do have a cell phone now (all zone leaders and office missionaries receive cell phones) which makes it really nice to communicate with the members and investigators when we aren`t in the apartment. We had 2 investigators in church on Sunday and we have an awesome ward here, with a really funny and helpful ward mission leader. He`s an old guy named Bro. Noble who was baptized about 3 years ago and is already a temple worker and a great ward mission leader with time to help us because he is retired. We are really excited because we already have some really great investigators and because we have conference next week!!!
Thanks for all your love and support and sorry if I don`t have time to answer all of your questions but just know that I love you and care for you. And don`t worry about getting anything else from the missionary store just the beanie is necessary, thanks.

GOODBYE PAN DE AZUCAR...
Hola a todos...
So we received the transfers last night and I found out that Elder Thompson will be staying here in Pan de Azucar but that sadly I will be leaving to go to Carrasco (pretty close to the temple!!!) and I have been called to be a Zone Leader. My new companion will be Elder Butler. Elder Thompson will be staying with an elder named Elder Calderòn from Nicaragua so that will be a good experience for him. I`m sad to have to leave but also excited and nervous to be a zone leader.
It was a great ground breaking ceremony and the weather couldn`t have been nicer. The Stake Presidency came, as well as the Temple President and his wife. There were a lot of members that came and even a few investigators. The Branch President read a little bit of the history of the Pan de Azucar branch from its humble beginnings when they met in a small house that used to be used for raising chickens, some of the pioneer members bore their testimonies then the Stake President explained how the chapel is going to be and how it is a new model (the first of it`s type) built in a way that nothing of the building will have to be destroyed to add on more parts as the branch grows and needs more space. There was even a picture of how it will all look when it is all done and finished, then everyone got to do dig with two golden shovels to break the ground. It was really good. We even put together a Pan de Azucar branch choir and sang ¨El Espìritu de Dios¨(the Spirit of God). It was a good way to end my time here in Pan de Azucar, but I will miss everyone here and especially the awesome branch that is here.
I`m excited for General Conference coming up. I`m getting close to the end of the Book of Mormon challenge as I start 3 Nefi today. I`ve learned a lot about the importance of the heart of the people and how it affects everyone in the entire nation, and also the power of one really good and pure heart amoung the most wicked of people. I definitely have felt a change of heart in me as I have been reading the Book of Mormon this time.
Thanks for everything and I hope that you all are reading your Book of Mormon every day so that you can feel this same change of heart and receive the blessings that the Lord has already promised us if we live the gospel of Jesus Christ.
I know that this is the true and only church of Christ. I know that God lives and that He loved us enough to send his only Begotten Son to die for us. Christ lives and loves us. I know that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God and that today a prophet of God receives revelation to guide us in these latter days. Thomas S. Monson is a prophet of God and we have a wonderful privelage to hear his words, which are the words of God on April 2nd and 3rd.

HOLA!
Hola a todos...
Alvaro was baptized on Saturday and we now have a new member of the Pan de Azucar branch!!! He almost gave us a heart attack when we called his house to see if he was ready to go with us in the bus to the neighboring city, Piriapolis, for his baptism (because we don`t have a chapel yet, we have to go in bus to a city 15 minutes away for our baptisms, here in Uruguay every chapel has a baptismal font) and his grandma told me that we have a small problem (the least invited words just hours before a baptism). He had been picked up by his boss to go work (luckily in Piriapolis where he was going to be baptized) just 5 hours before his baptism. He finished work and waited for almost 3 hours in front of the church for us and the branch to arrive in a bus, and he was finally baptized. It was great because as soon as we started the baptismal service it started pouring so we just barely escaped the downpour. It was Elder Thompson`s first baptism and so he baptized Alvaro, and his grandma who isn`t a member came and also came to see him get confirmed and now we are trying to help her get baptized soon. She just can`t bring herself to read and sincerely pray to know if the Book of Mormon is true.
Summer is officially over here and it`s starting to get a little chilly. We are also very excited for the ground breaking of the chapel here this Saturday at 6:00, the last weekend before transfers so Elder Thompson and I are very grateful for the privelege that we have to be present for this very important moment in Pan de Azucar history.
Please keep the following investigators in your prayers so that they can be baptized on the 26th of March. We need a few miracles to reach our goal of 4 baptisms in Pan de Azucar: Angelita, Camilo, Diana, Victoria, Analìa, Beatriz, Jorge, and Emilio. We need at least 3 of them to come to church this next Sunday and prepare themselves to be baptized on the 26th. We are getting a little nervous to see who will stay and who will go on the 22nd.
Even though changes are on Tuesday, I will still be e-mailing you on Monday next week. I`m glad you had a great week. I really hope that I don`t have to leave this great branch here in Pan de Azucar and that the Lord can bless me with at least six more weeks here.
Yeah, we heard about what hit Japan and I`m glad that Elder Taylor is ok. That makes for a very exciting beginning of his mission. That`s great that Elder Webster received his mission call as well. He`s going to love the mission. I love you all and hope that you all have as great of a week like I am going to have.

Hola a todos....
This week has been great and exciting... Although Alvaro did not get baptized last Saturday he is really excited for his baptism this Saturday... It was announced in church last Sunday and he saw us in the grocery store today and ran up to us to shake our hand and made sure we were coming to visit him tomorrow:). Keep him in your prayers so that he can run the last stretch without anymore hurdles. It`s great to hear that all is going well on the home front and that Colin had great success on his Eagle Project. Sorry to hear that half the house is sick. That`s great that Becca went through the temple and that Travis is adjusting well back in the real world.
We are all super excited for the ground breaking ceremony of the chapel on the 19th of March and for the baptism this Saturday. The Leadership meeting was great and I learned a lot from it on how to be a more efficient District Leader in helping more especifically each missionary in my district.
I learned a very big lesson today... We have had a very small leak in the sink in the bathroom for about a month. It started out super small but has slowly grown (¨but by degrees¨) so we didn`t notice it and the water bill came this week. Last month when the leak was just starting it came in as about 400 pesos which is just a little bit over the usual for a missionary`s house so we didn`t see it as a big deal, and a combination of it`s seemingly insignificance and my procrastination... it came in this month as over 1500 pesos!!! It didn`t seem that big of a difference and it was only leaking very little but it was a constant 24 hour leak that was more dangerous than it appeared to be.
I was thinking about it and the spirit hit me and made me think of all the very little things that we do that aren`t big problems but keep us from being 100% obedient and how we are tempted to let the little things go unattended and one day we will find that there is a bigger effect than we thought. So we called over a member that is a plumber and he fixed it in about 15 min. I know that the Atonement is like this as well that if we let little things go unattended or without repenting that we will find ourselves with a great debt, but if we call the Savior right away, although we still have to pay the debt we can fix the problem in an instant and start working on destroying the debt. I was able to stop the problem in time that I could pay the debt without any major problems but it would have been so much easier to have fixed the bathroom leak in the very first week that we were here. I know that the Savior loves us and wants to help us right away we just need to stop and call him and be willing to take responsibility for the mistake that we have made.

TIME JUST KEEPS FLYING BY...
Hola a todos...
Another week has blown away and sadly I can already feel that the time is speeding up compared to the last year of my mission! We are excited for another week here in Pan de Azucar. We have found a few new great investigators and are still pushing and fighting along with the others to reach their baptisms and we have a baptism this Saturday of a young man named Alvaro, but he still has to learn a few things and not work this Saturday (his job is a little inconsistent with the days and hours that he is asked to work) so please keep him in your prayers this week so that he can make the necessary time he needs to get baptized this Saturday! We have a baptismal goal for the month of March of 4 baptisms and in my district a goal of 13. We are all excited and working hard to accomplish this goal that we have set and need your prayers, Thanks.
Summer is coming to an end and the heat is dying down and it feels great now! The summer wasn`t as bad as I thought it would be -- not nearly as hot as Arizona but it was quite humid at times.
Elder Thompson`s birthday is coming up on the 13th and we are going to eat an Asado with one of the families here in the branch! Things are improving in my district... the sister missionaries in my district had 4 baptisms in February and have a goal for 5 in March. The ground breaking of the chapel has been postponed to the 26th of March (for reasons unknown) and so it is possible that one of us won`t be here to see it because the next changes are going to be on the 22nd of March.
That`s great that Colin had great success and few injuries in his Eagle Project and that Mason has received a calling already in the Deacon`s Quorum! Keep waiting with patience mom, you are almost there to your recovery! Sounds like things are going great down there in the AZ. That`s awesome that Colin wants to go to EFY this year. When he gets back from EFY can you send me the music from this year`s EFY CD?
On Wednesday I get to go to Montevideo for another leadership meeting and I`m excited because I always feel really animated and learn a lot from these leadership meetings. It`s weird to be in the older group of missionaries now and see that there are a lot of younger missionaries that are still learning and that I`m one of the ones that has to help them learn. I remember when I just arrived and I saw everyone else as being so old and experienced and I really looked up to them and now I`m the one being an example for the younger missionaries now. I love the mission and am sad that it is half over but very grateful that I get another year to keep serving and growing.
This church is true and the Book of Mormon is another testament of Christ. I was thinking today about the importance of the gospel in my life today and I saw and felt something strongly and simply about the commandments that have been given through the prophets and Christ himself... Lots of times we can find ourselves thinking of a commandment as a restriction or something that limits us but the commandments are really just a way that Christ and our Heavenly Father invite us to be happy and to avoid or overcome the temptations and trials that we have in this life. Every day from the people here I hear people say... I always pray for health and my family and nothing else. He is answering our prayers through His commandments. If we want health we need to obey the Word of Wisdom. If we want a good family, we need to obey the Law of Chastity. If we want what we need to support our families we must pay our tithing and keep the Sabbath day holy. Each commandment is an answer to somebody`s prayer and Satan just wants us to think of these answers as restrictions or limits on our freedom so that we won`t take them seriously. I know that Christ lives and that He loves each and every one of us.

ONE DOWN AND ONE TO GO!!!
Hola a todos...
Wow it feels weird now to know that my mission is already half over. I don`t want it to come to an end so fast! So I did the math the other day to find out the exact date that I will be leaving Uruguay with changes (transfers) and it will be the 21st of February 2012 and I should be landing in Arizona on Feb. 22nd (a Wednesday I believe). It has been a great year but I know that the 2nd one will be even better. I`m just grateful that I have the blessing of being able to serve a mission and hope that each one of you can have the chance to serve as a missionary as well (whether it be now or with your spouse in the future). For my year mark we celebrated with ice cream (something only for special occasions here because it`s super expensive). The tradition at one year is to burn a white shirt, but President doesn`t want us doing traditions that don`t make any sense in the mission (especially if all my shirts are still good to wear).
This week was a good one with lots of traveling back and forth between Pan de Azucar, Piriapolis and Maldanado. The sisters in my district (Hermana Dos Santos, from Uruguay and Hermana Moyes, from California) had a baptism and because I`m their district leader I got to do the baptismal interview. It was a cool experience because it was a 12 year old boy named Nahuel who was really shy but had a great desire to be baptized. Sadly we are still having difficulties in getting our investigators to reach the finish line and get baptized but we have a few that are just a step away, and we are hoping to have a baptism on March 5th. Please keep these names in your prayers: Alvaro, Camilo, Maria, Jenifer, Analìa and Stefani, all of who have a baptismal date for March.
We had a zone conference this week in Maldanado with President Da Silva, combined with the zone of Rocha as well. It was really good and President gave us two challenges: to become more of a team and united as a district, zone and mission AND to read the entire book of Mormon from cover to cover marking all the references of the heart BEFORE GENERAL CONFERENCE!!! He wants us to prepare our hearts to receive the instructions and promptings of the Spirit in the General Conference. I extend the challenge to anyone else who is up to it. I know you are all very busy but so am I so I know you CAN do it if you put your mind to it and I promise you that it will make a big difference in how you are prepared to listen to General Conference.
I hope that you all recover and that Colin has a great and safe time with his Eagle project. I know that the safe part is asking a bit much from him, hahaha. Don`t let the Cacti beat you up Colin.
I know that this church is true and that the only way to find the peace and happiness in this life and for all eternity is through living the gospel of Christ. Christ invites all to come unto him and as a representative of him, I invite you all too to come unto him and be baptized and endure to the end with all the energy of heart. THERE IS A DRUNK MEMBER TALKING TO ME WHILE I AM WRITING YOU...
Hola a todos...
There is a drunk member here talking to my companion right now while I am writing you. It`s sad but kind of funny at the same time because he`s asking us to look up some missionaries that baptized him over 20 years ago from the U.S. He is going on and on about random things about the U.S. and wars and other random things.
Well the week has gone well and we are excited and worried for our investigators at the same time, because they are all great but they each have their own obstacle. For example, Victoria and her friend are waiting for permission from their fathers to be able to be baptized, and Camilo needs to stop smoking, Daiana doesn`t want to get baptized but her dad wants her to, and Leonardo doesn`t want to listen to the lessons but is coming to church. They are all so close but just have one more obstacle to jump before their baptisms. Thanks for the updates and for the Valentine`s package, the chocolates are delicious.
I love you all very much and sorry their isn`t any time this week because this drunk member is making quite the scene here and we need to leave before he starts a problem. I love you all and will talk to you next week. You are in my prayers.
